Lions and tigers and bears! Oh my!
Lansing's downtown may not have any of those animal figures
chiseled into their buildings, but the ornate style of architecture certainly
reflects a city's growth periods. Two of the city's well-known architects
of the last two centuries was Darius Moon (buildings for Olds Motor Works,
Atlas Drop Forge, along with designing homes for several wealthy families.
He was also instrumental in designing Sparrow Hospital, the Leidercranz
Hall and the Lutheran <Chestnut St> School).
Edwyn A. Bown designed the Ingham County Courthouse, the
Carnegie Library, and many buildings on the campus of Michigan State University.
Most active of the architects was Earl Mead. He collaborated with Bown
to design the First Baptist Church on Capital Avenue, and designed the
New Church of Our Father at the corner of Capital Avenue and Ottawa Street.
Earl Mead later moved his design business to Northern Michigan where he
designed summer homes for Michigan's wealthy citizens.
