Michigan Historical Museum

Teacher’s Stuff- this section includes lesson plans, online galleries, readings, and other materials related to broad
historical time periods and Michigan-specific themes (lumbering, mining, farming, factory, rural Michigan, Great Depression,
1950’s, 1960’s, etc.). Lesson plans are directly related to Social Studies Content Standards. Some include ideas which
would tie into a visit too the Michigan Historical Museum.

The “Create A Car on an Assembly Line” lesson plan has students using legos and working in an assembly line to mimic the
car plants found throughout Michigan. The lesson plan includes background information, opportunities for further reading,
several exhibits at the Michigan Historical Museum relating to the automobile industry, questions for discussion and a reference list,
along with the content standards the activity relates to.

The “Tour the ‘Mining in Michigan’ Gallery On-line” site includes several pictures of Museum items, along with information about copper
and iron mining, mining communities, and shipping ore.
Turner-Dodge House

Turner-Dodge House Website offers a map of Lansing circa 1866 (Special for Kids, Bird’s Eye view map). You can zoom in on the map and
find the capitol, several churches, some schools, and several familiar roads. This map could be used with Benchmark I.2.6 to compare
to Lansing today.

Hmong Culture

This website offers several teacher resources. Many are books with ideas about how to incorporate the Hmong culture into the classroom.
(Education- Resources for Teachers- Pedagogical Materials- Hmong and the Storycloth This lesson plan looks at two storycloths, and asks
students to interpret what they see- to tell the story themselves. The site also has some information about the Hmong people, and about the
story cloths. This site relates to Benchmark II.1.3 and 4.

Michigan Supreme Court Virtual tour
